Are
you aroused? Women's Minds & Bodies Disagree
When it comes to the human sexual response, it seems that a man's body tends to agree about how turned on they are, whereas a woman's mind and body sometimes disagree. A study by Meredith Chivers from Queen's University in Kingson, Canada sought to understand if individuals mentally experiencing sexual arousal would have the same physicological genital arousal as well. Looking at data from 2,500 women and 1,900 men, they measured penile erection in men, and genital blood flow in women as a physiological response, adn they asked subjects to rate how sexually aroused they were. The results? For men, the ratings made by the subjects of how mentally turned on they were matched their genital response. For women, however, their minds and bodies were not as matched-- suggesting arousal in women is split between mental and physical components. The type of sexual content (ie, visual, audio recording) that was presented to men made little difference in how well their minds and genitals agreed. In women, however, it did. Women exposed to more varied sexual stimuli were more likely to have a sexual response where their mind and bodies agreed. There was also a difference in timing. When asked to rate how aroused they were at the end of the sexual stimulus, men's responses were closer. But when asked while being exposed to the sexual stimuli, both men's and women's data looked the same; both had similar disparancies between physical and mental arousal.
